Call for Guest Curator Mayworks 2023

Guest Curator MAYWORKS 2023

DEADLINE TO APPLY: MAY 16, 2022, 11:59PM

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Mayworks is seeking a guest curator to create a group show exhibiting the work of three artists for the 38th edition of the Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts, scheduled to take place in May 2023.

We are looking for works that speak to contemporary issues at the intersection of labour, social and/or environmental justice and that (re)frame or advance the artistic discourse of the festival.

All art forms are welcome including visual art, music, performance, theatre, dance, poetry, digital and multi-disciplinary works.

Art works that can be presented in outdoor public spaces are welcome.

The curator will propose an exhibition of three artists whose work aligns with our mission to showcase working people’s art, and to promote artists as workers and workers as artists. Mayworks operates within an anti-oppression framework that prioritizes the representation and participation of artists and audiences from equity-seeking groups.

In order to meet our arts funding conditions, at  least two of the artists should be Canadian citizens or permanent residents,  and one of those two should be from the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area.

TIMELINE:

May 11th: Application Deadline

June 15th: Curator will be selected by the Mayworks programming committee, according to how their work aligns with the Mayworks Vision, Mission, and Mandate

July 18th: Curator will present a draft proposal to the Mayworks programming committee

September 12th: due date for final proposal with confirmed artists and samples of the actual work to be exhibited

COMMITMENT AND FEES:

The Guest Curator will assist with and provide documentation necessary for Mayworks to apply for grants to present the works at the Mayworks Festival in May 2023. Grant deadlines begin in October 2022.

The Guest Curator will work with Mayworks staff to find appropriate venues for the presentation of the work.

The Guest Curator will work with the artists to install their work.

The Guest Curator will recieve a fee of $2500 for this work.

Artists will be paid, at a minimum, an artist fee of $721.  This is based on the CARFAC fee for a group show of three artists for a Category 1 presenter. As grant results become known, further funding to cover installation and production costs may be provided.

Note that this is not a commissioning project and artworks should be complete by September when the final proposal and art work samples are due.
