L. AKHTER

L. Akhter is a Bangladeshi emerging storyteller, researcher and multidisciplinary artist based in Treaty 13 territory. Her work and praxis explore identity and intergenerational healing. Akhter has exhibited at Hearth Gallery and Project 40 Collective in Toronto and recently published a poetry anthology titled Shurma. She uses open mics and installation as a platform for reclaiming power and community building.

সাবধান / SHABDHAN (“careful”) sits at the easternmost Scarborough subway station; central to the homes, workplaces, and lives of South Asian migrant and marginalized people. More specifically, the installation explores the literal and lateral surveillance faced by Bengali communities. সাবধান is an interrogation of and a plea to the community, of caring and being careful.

It asks those who engage with the work—Is this what you meant?—to reflect upon the ways that performative respectability become violent microcosms of living in surveillance states: we are surveilled, and we surveil each other.

সাবধান / SHABDHAN (“careful”) poster can be seen May 8 – 30th at Kennedy Station.

সাবধান / SHABDHAN (“careful”) interactive installation happens 12 – 4pm on Saturday, May 21st as part of In Transit at Dentonia Park.
