MAKING SPACES
MAY 2nd-June 27th, 2020
Sur Gallery
39 Queens Quay E. #100
Bringing together artists of the Latin American diaspora, Making Spaces looks at the lingering effects of colonial history in the Americas. Through moments of action and contemplation around personal stories of migration, we gather with the ongoing task to find, make, and carry home within us.
Making Spaces explores what it means to create safe spaces for self-reflection, contemplation, and action, as a way to cope with dislocation. Visitors are invited to join in hands-on reflection around issues of identity, migration, colonialism, and privilege: making fabric prints, interacting with textile and architectural installations, exploring video and photography.
Connecting themes of portraiture, landscapes, ecologies, and history, Making Spaces will challenge the absence of people of colour within artistic genres while exploring familial heritage and the meaning of home.
Making Spaces is a project of the Sur Gallery Mentorship Program, which provides professional development instruction to emerging artists and curators of Latin American descent.
Artists: Aline Setton, Camila Salcedo, Michelle Peraza, denirée isabel, Ana Luisa Bernárdez. Curated by the artists, in collaboration with Karina Roman Justo.
