Calling all Eritrean and Ethiopian newcomers, workers and community members! Join us for a community gathering and creative workshop.

In search for opportunity, many of us arrived in Canada through great sacrifice, leaving our dreams, degrees, families, and professions in Eritrea and Ethiopia. For many of our community members, we are represented in working roles that are precarious and unprotected.

In this workshop, we will learn to dramatize our stories and experiences into scenes that help us reflect on our relationship to work and the power we hold. Together, we will also discuss finding employment opportunities, unions, and knowing your rights in the workplace.

Food and refreshments will be provided.

The event is presented as part of the Mayworks’ Condé Beveridge Labour Arts Residency.

The Mayworks Condé Beveridge Labour Arts Residency will support the creation of a short documentary film about the Toronto & York Region Labour Council’s Ethiopian & Eritrean Workers Network. Led by Abdalla Idris and Teferi Zemene, the network supports newcomers from Eritrea and Ethiopia understand and fight for their rights in the workplace, gain access to unionized jobs, and integrate into their community.

The Toronto & York Region Labour Council represents over 200,000 workers from diverse sectors in labour unions across the Toronto region. Committed to fighting for economic, social, racial and climate justice, the Council works tirelessly to create a fair and equitable future for all.
